The two main rival parties in French Polynesia are continuing to lobby the two members of the Alliance for a New Democracy in a bid to have a majority and form a government.
Nicole Bouteau and Philip Schyle said before the Tahiti by-election that they would not enter into a formal coalition with either the Tahoeraa Huiraatira Party or the Union For Democracy.

"All sides are tight-lipped apart from Mr Schyle saying his faction will make a decision within 48 hours. Gaston Flosse needs the support of both members to have a majority while Oscar Temaru only needs one. Both Mr Schyle and Ms Bouteau were part of the ousted Temaru government but after campaigning hard against them, Mr Flosse now says the two are on his side because they also oppose independence from France. And as the by-election result is still not official, Mr Flosse won't resign although he promised that he would quit the presidency if his party failed to win. His party says it is open to all elected members who want French Polynesia to live in peace.
