Papua New Guinea's internal security minister, Bire Kimisopa, has admitted police cannot effectively monitor gun smuggling, even by their own members.
Mr Kimisopa was responding to concerns raised by Sandaun Governor Carlos Yuni in Parliament about gun smuggling and the police's non-performance over it.
The Minister said it was a known fact that officers from the Correctional Service, the police and the Defence Force leased their guns and sold confiscated weapons.
Mr Kimisopa says all issues relating to gunrunning will be discussed at a gun summit in Garoka in June.
He says that AusAid and the PNG Government are funding programmes aimed at stopping gun smuggling.
