Fiji's Electoral Commission says no one will be allowed to interfere in the electoral process ahead of next year's general election.

The assurance has been given by commission chairman, Graham Leung, who is also president of the Fiji Law Society.

Mr Leung has directed the acting supervisor of elections, Epeli Rabuka, to ensure that all procedures mandated under the Electoral Act are followed scrupulously.

His instructions follow a complaint from the opposition leader, Mahendra Chaudhry, about a forthcoming visit to Iraq and Kuwait by the labour minister, Kenneth Zinck, and government officials.

Mr Chaudhry has alleged that the visit is aimed at registering voters and campaigning among the nearly 2,000 Fijians who work as security guards in Iraq and Kuwait.

Mr Zinck says he will be talking to representatives of security companies employing Fijians in the two countries to facilitate their voting next year.

He says it is not his intention to interfere in the independence of the electoral process.
