Fiji's vice president issues warning that country could face more political crises

9:08 pm on 24 February 2005

Fiji's new vice president has warned of future political crises of the type experienced in the coup years of 1987 and 2000.

Ratu Joni Madraiwiwi says this will happen if the major races of Fiji don't find a way forward together.

Ratu Joni says further crisis is possible because there are a number of people who are able to manipulate deep-seated fears of insecurity among indigenous Fijians.

Radio Fiji reports that the vice president issued the warning while launching the book Tears in Paradise which describes the horrors and suffering of the early Indian labourers who arrived in Fiji.

Ratu Joni said what is evident in reading the book is the lack of honest and meaningful dialogue and any rational discourse about the future of Fiji's peoples.

He said this can only be achieved through trust that has to be built over time by being open with one another.

Tears in Paradise has been written by Rajendra Prasad, a former Fiji citizen who is now a resident of New Zealand.
