Fiji electoral commission warns minister not to interfere in election process

Fiji's Electoral Commission has delivered a very public warning to the labour minister, Kenneth Zinck, not to interfere in the electoral process.

The warning from the chairman of the commission Graham Leung, on Fiji TV, came after Mr Zinck said this week that he would facilitate voting by Fiji citizens during his forthcoming visit to Kuwait and Iraq.

Mr Zinck said he would be talking to the companies employing Fijians about setting up polling booths for voting.

Mr Leung says Mr Zinck's intention is a clear breach of the Electoral Act.

He says the registering of voters and determining the location of polling booths are matters solely for the Supervisor of Elections.

Mr Leung say no political party is entitled to embark on an exercise of the nature proposed by Mr Zinck.

He has already directed that no official from the Elections Office should accompany Mr Zinck.
