Fiji union says minister's proposed visit to Kuwait is "vote-buying"

A Fiji trade union has criticised the labour minister, Kenneth Zinck's forthcoming visit to Kuwait and Iraq as an unnecessary waste of taxpayer's money.

The visit will cost 25-thousand US dollars.

The general secretary of the Fiji Mineworkers Union, Kavekini Navuso, has told the Sunday Sun the money could be better used for the education of secondary and tertiary students, or on improving shipping to remote islands.

Mr Navuso says the trip is worthless and just a vote buying tactic for the next general election.

He says Mr Zinck was never invited by the Kuwait government or the security companies employing Fijian workers there.

Mr Navuso says Mr Zinck should remain in Fiji to work on the unemployment problem rather than usurping the efforts of security company agents who recruit Fiji workers for Kuwait and Iraq.
