French Polynesia's Union For Democracy expects more defections to its side

4:35 pm on 1 March 2005

The Union for Democracy in French Polynesia says it expects to get the support of several members of the Tahoeraa Huiraatira Party when presidential elections are held in three days.

Today's planned vote had to be abandoned because the Tahoeraa led by Gaston Flosse boycotted the sitting to choose a new president.

The Tahoeraa candidate, Gaston Tong Sang, has told the Tahitipresse news agency that the party stayed away in protest at attempts by the Union For Democracy to get Tahoeraa members to defect.

But Robert Maker, who is an advisor to the Union For Democracy leader, Oscar Temaru, says when the assembly meets again in three days, Mr Flosse may be in for a surprise.

"We have contacts with some members of the Tahoeraa and I think there will some more than 30 members in the assembly who will support Oscar Temaru as president."

Many Tahoeraa members have been in the Tuamotu islands for inauguration ceremonies.
