The manager of upcoming elections on the Papua New Guinea island of Bougainville says more outside help is needed in order for the elections to run smoothly.

Polling is set to begin on May the 20th for 40 positions in the new government.

Buka-based Mathias Pihei says he is getting considerable help from both the Papua New Guinea Electoral Commission and the Australian Electoral Commission.

But he says wider assistance would be welcome.

"We really need some assistance in terms of just, not only logistics but to have resource people in Bougainville who can put together manuals, procedures, policies, who can assist us in putting together all this training manual, training material, so that we can use these materials to train our polling officer when the time comes."

The Pacific Islands Forum has already offered to assist with the election
