10:26 am on 7 March 2005

Thousands of people in French Polynesia have attended a ceremony to mark the 208th anniversary of the arrival of the Gospel.

The event was organised by the Maohi Protestant Church at the main stadium in Tahiti.

Among the people attending were the newly elected president, Oscar Temaru, and the French high commissioner, Michel Mathieu.

The day marks the arrival of the first British missionaries at Matavai Bay in 1797.
