The French ambassador to New Zealand, Jean-Michel Marlaud, says France sees no use in allowing French Polynesia be re-inscribed on the UN list of territories to be decolonised.
France has acceded to the wish of New Caledonia's separatists to have the territory put on the list but refuses to grant the same to French Polynesia.
The president of French Polynesia, Oscar Temaru, lobbied for support on the subject at the last Pacific Islands Forum in Samoa but was criticised in Tahiti for not representing the views of his coalition.
And Mr Marlaud says for France, the proposed re-inscription is of no use.
"As far as the French government is concerned, we don't see the use of having French Polynesia put on the list. As I said before there are regular elections in French Polynesia and we don't see the fact to re-inscribe French Polynesia on the list would add to the normal working of the institutions."
