Oscar Temaru names his new Cabinet in French Polynesia

8:25 pm on 8 March 2005

The French Polynesian president, Oscar Temaru, has named 16 ministers in the second government he has formed in less than nine months.

Mr Temaru retained key ministers, such as the finance minister, Emile Vanfasse, but was unable to include any ministers from the Fetia Api party which declined to be a coalition partner.

He has appointed Louis Frebault of the rival Tahoeraa Huiraatira Party to continue as minister in charge of the development of the outer islands.

But Mr Temaru says the former budget minister, Georges Puchon, didn't switch sides.

"I met him a couple of times and we talked about the development of our country, but I also have to talk to my people, and the response from our people, from our base - they didn't agree that Mr Puchon will be our minister of economy and finance."
