Federated States of Micronesia await congressional election results

2:53 pm on 9 March 2005

Election officials in the Federated States of Micronesia say they have only received a couple of unofficial results from ballot boxes from yesterday's congressional election.

The deputy director of the election office John Atahan says while the unofficial results are complete for the state of Kosrae, nothing has been finalised from the states of Yap, Pohnpei and Chuuk.

Mr Atahan says less than a quarter of polling stations have been officially counted.

"Some states are still doing the counting, due to some problems with transportation - all the islands are scattered. As of now we have received a couple but they're not official yet. We have to give them to the President first."

John Atahan says while there is no official deadline, they hope to have received all unofficial results by the end of the day.
