A report from Niue says the country has appointed its first female diplomat.

Niue News is reporting that the current secretary to government, Sisilia Talagi, has been appointed the island's new High Commissioner to New Zealand.

Both the Niue government and the New Zealand High Commission haven't been able to confirm the report.

The internet report adds New Zealand's High Commissioner to Niue, Sandra Lee-Vercoe, made the announcement at an international women's day rally on Niue.

Mrs Talagi is expected to take up her job after the general election next month.
