Six houses in a village outside the Papua New Guinea capital of Port Moresby were swept away by huge waves on Thursday morning.

No casualties were reported in the devastation that took the entire Barakau village by surprise.

The Pacnews agency reports the power of the waves left more than 20 families homeless and caused thousands of dollars worth of damage.

Villagers described the waves as "tsunami size" which caught them by surprise at about 7am.

In total, there were about 45 individuals from six houses that were affected.
