Catholic group in PNG disappointed at move to legalise abortion

5:50 am on 12 March 2005

A Catholic lobby group in Papua New Guinea says it's disappointed by reports suggesting the Governor of Morobe province wants to legalise abortion when mothers are HIV-positive.

The Catholic HIV/AIDS Secretariat says if the reports are correct, it would show that Luther Wenge believes that children born to HIV positive mothers, will be HIV positive.

The Catholic group claims it's a fact that the unborn can be given many chances of not being infected.

But tt says medical intervention is being offered in a number of hospitals, as a way to reduce the number of transmissions of the virus from mother to child.

The Secretariat says the reality of the HIV/AIDS pandemic is bad enough without people in leadership roles creating despair among the people affected.

The PNG government hasn't been available for comment.
