PNG to provide judges for Solomon Islands

9:12 pm on 14 March 2005

Papua New Guinea is to provide judges to Solomon Islands as part of an aid package for its neighbour.

The signing of a Memorandum of Understanding on Judicial Assistance by PNG Justice Minister Mark Malkapai and the Solomon's Foreign Minister Laurie Chan will allow two PNG Magistrates to work in Solomon Islands.

One of the Magistrates will be resident in Solomon Islands while another will be on special attachment.

PNG's Principal Magistrate, Mandin Kapin, one of those assigned to work in the Solomons, was present at the signing of the MOU on Friday.

The PNG aid followed a specific request from Honiara for assistance with its judiciary.
