The Solomon Islands government is considering extending the contract of the police commissioner, Bill Morrell, for another two years.
Reliable sources say the police minister, Augustine Taneko, is pressing the government to have the contract extended as an acknowledgment for him taking the post during the recent difficult years.
Mr Morrell arrived in Honiara from Britain just over two years ago when gunmen wielded a lot of power.
The sources say Mr Taneko wants to give Mr Morrell credit for taking over a collapsed police force with an extension of his engagement .
Australia has expressed interest in providing a police commissioner.
Meanwhile, interviews in Australia for a possible successor for Mr Morrell have been postponed indefinitely.
