Forum head to brief American Samoa on Pacific Plan

7:57 pm on 17 March 2005

The Secretary General of the Pacific Islands Forum, Greg Urwin, is travelling to American Samoa to brief the Governor, Togiola Tulafono on the Pacific Plan.

It is the first time that American Samoa, which is not a member of the Forum, has been formally briefed on the Plan, which is aimed at developing closer links among the Forum's 16 members.

One of the aims of the Plan is to build closer links with the region's non-sovereign states.

A draft of the Plan is currently being circulated throughout the region with the public being encouraged to make their views known.

Public discussion sessions are to be held in the two main New Zealand cities next week.

By June a new draft is expected and it is planned that the Forum leaders will adopt it when they meet in Port Moresby in August.
