Tonga's fisheries minister has opened the annual consultation ahead of discussions on the fisheries treaty between the US and the Pacific Island countries.

The meeting of members of the Forum Fisheries Agency in Nukualofa will prepare for talks with the US next week.

The director of the FFA, Feleti Teo, says its treaty with the US is unique as it has one licence to fish wherever in FFA waters..

Mr Teo says for the licence the US pays 21 million US dollars a year.
