New Zealand's prime minister, Helen Clark, has set up a prime minister's fellowship for Samoa.

This was announced after she met her Samoan counterpart, Tuilaepa Sailele Malielegaoi, in Auckland.

In a statement, she says the annual fellowship will be awarded to a leader or potential leader from either the public or private sector.

Miss Clark says Samoa is the only country with which New Zealand has a formal Treaty of Friendship.
