PNG military officers call for firearms ban

8:11 pm on 24 March 2005

Several officers of the Papua New Guinea Defence Force have called for a ban on firearms to help curb gun related crimes.

They made the call at the guns committee meeting at Murray Barracks in Port Moresby.

The Post Courier newspaper says the officers want a ban because they claim guns destroy the country.

One officer said there were a lot of guns in the country held both legally and illegally by people with money who can afford to sponsor the purchase of the weapons.

He said politicians and ex-politicians are the ones sponsoring the firearms and giving them to people to be used and zero tolerance should be shown these people.
