The Speaker in Niue has dissolved parliament and declared a general election for the 30th of April.

Niue News reports nominations for the 14 village seats and six common roll seats in the island's Legislative Assembly are expected to open within the next 10 days.

About 800 electors are on the rolls but the thousands of Niueans living overseas aren't allowed to vote.

The government led by the Premier Young Vivian has seen no votes of no confidence brought against it in the last three years.

Niue News reports commentators as saying the legislature was the most stable since the late Sir Robert Rex led the country into self-government in free association with New Zealand.
