Fiji police dismiss claims of another coup as false

6:24 pm on 29 March 2005

Fiji's police commissioner says claims that another coup is imminent are totally baseless.

Andrew Hughes has told Radio Legend that the rumour was being spread by a group of disaffected prisoners.

He says a full police assessment of the rumour has found that there is nothing to it.

Mr Hughes says police are aware of a certain group who are trying to instill fear among people by talking about a repeat of the May 2000 crisis.

But he says the majority of the people in Fiji do not want and will not tolerate another coup.

Mr Hughes says some people are flogging a dead horse and the future for Fiji is forwards, not backwards.

He says it is unfortunate that a small group keeps trying to agitate for unrest.
