Fiji Police Commissioner warns police against betraying the public's trust

Fiji's police commissioner has warned his officers that he would react in an uncompromising way if they betray the trust of the public.

The Fiji Sun reports that Andrew Hughes issued the warning after two police officers were charged with raping a woman at the Namaka police station near Nadi Airport during the Easter weekend.

Mr Hughes says when society places its trust in the police force, it comes with a heavy responsibility.

He says any police officers of whatever rank would face the full brunt of the law if they err.

Mr Hughes says ten detectives are working on the case in which the two officers have appeared in the Nadi magistrate's court and pleaded not guilty to rape.

Meanwhile, a Suva taxi driver, Livai Ratukiqiwaqa, who has pleaded guilty to raping a 12-year old girl whom he was supposed to drive to school, will be sentenced today.
