The Tongan Human Rights and Democracy Movement has selected former education lecturer, Finau Tutone, as its candidate for the by-election on Tongatapu created by the elevation of Dr Fred Sevele to Cabinet.

Two members of the Democracy Movement, Dr Sevele and Peauafi Haukinima, of the Niuas, were promoted last week - the first time that popularly elected MPs have been taken into Cabinet.

The by-election for the new Peoples Representatives will be held on May 5th.

Mr Tutone, a former deputy director of the Democracy Movement, joins former MP, Aisea Taofi, who was nominated for the vacant Niuas seat.

Two of the nine nobles elected in the poll earlier this month were also added to the Cabinet for the first time and replacements for the constituencies of Tongatapu and Eua, will be chosen by the nobility on May 3rd.
