The first candidate to announce his intention to run for President of the autonomous Papua New Guinea province of Bougainville says he is hoping a consensus style government will result.

The island is due to go to elections from May 20th, when a 41-member legislature will be selected.

The present Governor, John Momis, will contest the Presidency under the banner of the newly established New Bougainville Party.

He says the party wants to bring all the leadership of Bougainville together in a new style of government.

"The new Bougainville Party's aim is to unite the leadership on Bougainville into a team that can work together - not work against one another. This was the approach taken to negotiate the Bougainville peace agreement."
