Fiji police want extension of statute of limitation in coup cases

Fiji's police commissioner says the force is likely to ask the Fiji Law Reform Commission to revise the statute of limitation on the treason charge.

Andrew Hughes has told Radio Legend that the two-year limit within which to charge people with treason is not sufficient.

e says two years is manifestly inadequate to investigate anything as complex as treason.

Mr Hughes says the problem is now evident as the police face major obstacles in charging people for the May 2000 coup because the law says people cannot be charged with treason more than two years after the offence was committed.

He hopes the review of the penal code in the next few months will address the issue
