An Indonesian police investigation team says a police chief in the province of Papua didn't try to steal 5000 cubic metres of illegally logged timber.

The team, sent to investigate illegal logging in the province, questioned the Manokwari police chief Dedi Kusnadi, last week.

A spokesman says they've accepted Mr Dedi's explanation that he had ordered the timber to be secretly moved because he feared loggers would destroy it.

More than 70 people have been detained during the past two months, in connection with timber smuggling offences.
