Pacific Islands Forum says RAMSI review is timely

8:18 pm on 7 April 2005

The Pacific Islands Forum says the forthcoming review of the Australian-led Regional Assistance Mission to Solomon Islands will consider criticisms of the mission.

The Forum is co-ordinating the establishment of an Eminent Persons' Group, headed by Papua New Guinea, to review RAMSI.

The review follows a request from Solomon Islands.

The Forum Secretary-General, Greg Urwin, says the multi-national RAMSI has led to a dramatic transformation of the security situation in the country.

And, he says the review's timely, coming as Solomon Islands moves, with RAMSI's help, into an equally important new rebuilding phase.

But, Mr Urwin says the review won't ignore criticisms of Ramsi.

"I think it'll be the job of the Eminent Person's Group to balance those observations against the achievement of Ramsi, and against that synthesis to make some observations about how to conduct things in the future."
