Solomon Islands government to swear in Australian as police commissioner

8:22 am on 12 April 2005

The Solomon Islands new Police Commissioner, the Australian, Shane Castles, is expected to be sworn in today.

Commissioner Castles replaces the British man, Bill Morrell, who held the position for just over two years.

Mr Morrell had been sponsored by the European Union, but the Solomon Islands Government chose Mr Castles after Canberra offered to fund an Australian officer for the position.

Australians now occupy the two top positions in the Solomon Islands police, with the senior officer in the Regional Assistance Mission, Sandi Peisley, also assigned to the local police, as the deputy commissioner.
