Vanuatu asks NZ for assistance with building economy

7:30 pm on 14 April 2005

The Vanuatu government is asking New Zealand for assistance to build up its productive sector.

Vanuatu's Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, Sato Kilman, is in Wellington for talks with the Government and aid officials.

The visit furthers efforts to rebuild relations after the Ham Lini led Government replaced the divisive Serge Vohor administration four months ago.

Australia has already recommitted to Vanuatu - last week announcing a long term aid strategy offering budgetary assistance to the health and education sectors.

Mr Kilman says they want New Zealand to help develop economic activity, particularly away from the two main towns of Vila and Luganville.

"So we think the right place is to get the people in the rural areas, the small business people in the rural areas, to be more involved in building the economy. And if we can get more assistance from New Zealand into the rural areas to help the small entrepreneurs, then that is the way to go to build our economy."
