Fiji Minister to head Eminent Persons' review of RAMSI

2:09 pm on 15 April 2005

The Fiji Foreign Minister, Kaliopate Tavola, will head an Eminent Persons' Group review of the Regional Assistance Mission to Solomon Islands.

The review group will also include the Pacific Islands Forum Secretary-General, Greg Urwin, and be supported by a Forum deputy secretary, Peter Forau, a former senior civil servant in Solomon Islands.

A spokesman for the Solomons' Prime Minister, Sir Allen Kemakeza, says the group will get down to work next month, and it's hoped it will complete its work by November.

The review, which was requested by Solomon Islands, comes as RAMSI prepares to respond within days to the first of two legal challenges to its work and role in Solomon Islands.

The Forum, which has been coordinating the group's establishment, says it will have three members, with the third name yet to be confirmed.

Mr Urwin has said it will consider criticisms of RAMSI.
