NZ criticised by international committee for low international aid contribution

New Zealand has been criticised by an international committee for lagging behind other developed countries in its contribution towards international aid.

The Pacific Islands region is the biggest benefactor of New Zealand's aid programme.

The OECD's Development Assistance Committee says New Zealand has successfully refocused its aid delivery through the creation of NZAid in 2002.

But it says New Zealand contributes only 0.23 of its Gross National Income in aid, making it one of the lowest contributers of the 22 countries surveyed.

The aid minister, Marian Hobbs, acknowledges New Zealand's low ranking, but says aid has increased by about eight per cent since NZAid was established.

Marian Hobbs says New Zealand has no strategy to meet the UN target for aid contribution, but this year's budget may address that.
