American Samoa checks passports of its returning soldiers

American Samoa's Congressman, Faleomavaega Eni Hunkin, has criticised the territory's governor over his support for measures that would require military personnel to present valid passports to enter the territory.

The Congressman has written a letter to Togiola Tulafono to say he's received many complaints about the decision.

Faleomavaega says active duty military members seeking to re-enter the United States after serving abroad only have to present their military ID and orders to gain entry at any port in the United States or 49 foreign nations.

He declares the passport requirement to be contrary to local law, federal policy and international agreements.
