Police chief in Vanuatu welcomes move to courb kava drinking by his officers

Vanuatu's Acting Commissioner of Police says he welcomes new moves to discipline officers who consume kava on the job.

The suggestion is part of the new police service commission's review to making the force more effective.

Major Arthur Caulton says officers drinking kava on the job is a major problem.

"It's something that affects police effectiveness. When you take kava, you tend to be slower than your normal reaction system so I think kava taken when off duty is OK, but when you are on duty, it normally affects your ability to react."
