Defence to cross-examine witness in Pitcairn Supreme Court hearing

10:30 am on 21 April 2005

The defence will this morning cross-examine Pitcairn Island's secretary, who is giving evidence in the Pitcairn Supreme Court sitting in Auckland.

Betty Christian rejects claims that six island men found guilty of sex abuse last year, would not have known that English law covered serious offences on the remote island.

The men are challenging their convictions.

The defence has indicated it will cross-examine Mrs Christian's evidence that no islander had any trouble accessing the laws.

Mrs Christian also described the Pitcairn community as educated and well-travelled, and said standards on the island are no different to those in any other society.
