Samoa doctors appeased over pay and conditions demands

The government in Samoa appears to have appeased doctors threatening strike action over pay and conditions with promises of better paypackets in July.

Doctors working-to-rule have called off all industrial action after Medical Association officials met the Prime Minister, cabinet, Ministy health and Public Service Commission representatives.

The president of the medical association, Lauano Dr Herbert Peters, says the lack of salary progression and parity with expatriate doctors were amongst the grievances raised at the meeting.

Lauano declines to specify how much of a pay rise doctors want, but he's confident the government will meet their demands at the start of the new financial year.

"We're putting our trust in cabinet and the government to fulfill what we discussed in our roundtable discussion. They showed us documents that they are working on it and they promised that this would be implemented by the first week of July."

Lauano says some senior registrars have been working for more than ten years with hardly a move in salary while more junior doctors are being paid the same as new intakes.
