Nominations have just closed for candidates standing in next month's first autonomous elections in the Papua New Guinea province of Bougainville.

The Post-Courier newspaper reports the nominees include the Me'ekamui Defence Force soldier, Boniface Arunara; the first candidate from the secessionist movement led by Francis Ona.

Mr Arunara will stand against Ishmael Toroama in the Ex-Combatant's Seat in Arawa in the centre of Bougainville Island.

The office of the Bougainville political parties monitor says it's recognising four political parties as standing in the election.

The parties include the Bougainville People's Congress Party, led by Joseph Kabui, the New Bougainville Party led by John Momis, the Bougainville Independence Movement Party led by James Tanis, and the Bougainvillean Labour Party.
