Solomon Islands environmentalist says key politicians preventing forestry reform

An environmentalist in Solomon Islands says members of parliament and key government ministers are preventing legislation going ahead that would help reform the logging industry.

Oxfam's one of many environmental groups which have been lobbying the government to pass the long-delayed forestry bill, concerned that forestry resources are being used up at an alarming rate in the country.

The Forestry minister David Holosivi says the government is committed to promoting legislation that will introduce a more sustainable rate of logging.

Meanwhile, a just released Auditor General's report says the Government has lost hundreds of thousands of dollars in revenue amid a long history of logging companies not paying as stipulated in logging agreements.

Oxfam's Genevieve Walker says it's unclear whether the report will help highlight the need for reform in the industry.

"Despite this latest news that there's been a discovery that x amount of million, I'm assuming, Solomon dollars is not been going to government coffers when it should be. Principally you've got members of parliament and key ministers that are just not interested in having new legislation."
