The Cook Islands Ministry of Education hopes an initiative to upskill teachers using the internet will expand.

Twelve teachers in the Cook Islands began studying this week for the Graduate Diploma of Education in Management from the University of Auckland.

The move is part of a memorandum of understanding signed last year between the Cook Islands government and the University.

A director at the Cook Islands Ministry of Education, Peter Etchers hopes this type of distance learning over the internet will pave the way for other such training courses.

"It is quite a large financial commitment. But we're fortunate in the Cook Islands to having support for a lot of our projects, and I hope this is just a forerunner of more things to come in the future."
