Dysentery cases reported on rise in Solomons capital

The number of dysentery patients seeking medical attention at the main hospital in the capital of Solomon Islands is increasing, with one death confirmed at the weekend.

Officials at the national referral hospital in Honiara have this morning confirmed a man in his early 40s died there on Saturday, as a result of dysentery.

The medical superintendent, Doctor Silent Tovosia, says most recent cases are in adults living in settlements outside Honiara.

He says dysentery occurs in people who drink contaminated water or eat contaminated food.

The medical superintendent advises people to boil their water if they're not sure the water is clean.

Dr Tovosia advises people who have diarrhoea to go to the clinics or hospital, before they get worse.
