PNG seeks improved road links to Indonesia

3:54 pm on 26 April 2005

Papua New Guinea's prime minister, Sir Michael Somare, has spoken out in favour of improving road links to neighbouring Indonesia.

Sir Michael was speaking in Jakarta where he attended the 2005 Asian-African summit.

The newspaper, The National, reports that he has signalled PNG's intention to upgrade the existing Vanimo/Wutung road and to extend this road link to Wewak and Madang.

And, Sir Michael has suggested that another road link could be built between Merauke in Indonesia's Papua province and the PNG town of Weam.

He says the two countries could also enhance border management and mitigate security concerns over illegal gun smuggling and the illicit movement of people and drugs.

Sir Michael reaffirmed a standing invitation for the President of Indonesia to visit PNG.
