New Caledonia youths sentenced for pretending to be police

Four New Caledonian youths who posed as police officers, using uniforms and handcuffs bought from a sex shop, have been given light sentences.

Three were given suspended jail terms and ordered to do 160 hours of community service and the fourth, who had a criminal record, was sentenced to a month in jail.

One of the youths told the court that he had failed a police entrance test but still wanted to be a police officer.

The Nouvelles Caledoniennes newspaper reported that the four stopped people in the street and questioned them, including someone who had jumped a red light while driving a scooter.

The court heard that one of those they stopped realised that their handcuffs had come from a sex shop.
