Children join in Solomon Islands crime prevention rally

2:12 pm on 2 May 2005

Hundreds of school children and parents in the Solomon Islands capital, Honiara, took part in a rally at the weekend on crime prevention.

The march was organised by Honiara city police and concluded with talks at the Cultural Village.

The Minister for Police, Augustine Taneko, said the occasion highlighted the fact that crime was no longer a police issue, but rather an issue that needed everybody's cooperation.

Mr Taneko says Solomon Islanders must stand together to fight crime, and to help rebuild society and the country.

He says what happened during the rally was an example of the community working hand in hand with the police.
