PNG women urged to form united opposition to guns

A women's group in East Sepik province of Papua New Guinea say all women should create a united front on guns and declare PNG gun-free.

The call was made in a submission presented to the National Guns Control Committee at a public forum held in Wewak, last week.

The submission came from the East Sepik Committee Against Violence Against Women which is under the umbrella of the East Sepik Council of Women.

The Post Courier newspaper reports that the East Sepik women demanded that the Government completely bans guns in the country.

The Committee says the security of PNG is at risk because of guns.

And it wants women to make it their business to reach into all corners of PNG society to educate every child and youth about the destructive impact guns have on their lives.

It also calls for public flogging for gun offences.
