Two mid-ranking officers from the Indonesian Navy have been arrested for illegal logging offences in the province of Papua.

The local military commander in Sorong, Hendardji, says the two officers were arrested on Saturday.

Mr Hendarji said both were due to have been questioned by military police yesterday.

A report from local Papua newspaper, the Cendrawasih Post, says the men were allegedly caught in possession of up to 4,800 cubic metres of the timber merbau, also known as kwila.

Since a crackdown began in early March, 164 people have been charged with illegal logging offences.
