French Polynesia's leader poised to favour European constitution

The French Polynesian president, Oscar Temaru, says he has asked the French opposition to send envoys to Papeete to campaign on the European constitution which is put to a referendum later this month in both France and its overseas possessions.

Mr Temaru was speaking in Paris after meeting the leader of the Socialist Party, Francois Hollande, who has been a political ally of French Polynesia's Union For Democracy led by Mr Temaru.

Mr Temaru is yet to announce his support for the constitution but reports from Paris say he is set to do so after tomorrow's meeting with the French prime minister, Jean-Pierre Raffarin.

The other main political parties in French Polynesia are also in favour of the constitution but opinion polls in France have given the "no" camp a slight advantage.
