American Samoan senator to act against Samoa consulate plans

7:33 pm on 4 May 2005

An American Samoan senator, Alo Dr. Paul Stevenson, says he will lodge an objection with the US state department to Samoa's plans to open a consulate in the territory.

This comes after a stand-off between the two Samoas over the tightening of travel rules.

Alo has accused Samoa of discrimination for asking American Samoans to get a permit to travel to Samoa.

He says at the same time a US citizen carrying the same US passport will not be required to do so.

Alo says the new Samoan policy is extreme and alarming.
