American Samoa's Secretary of Samoan Affairs, Mauga Tasi Asuega, has sent to the Senate certification letters confirming the selection of Pulefaasisina Palauni Tuiasosopo as the new senator for Lealataua County.

Paramount Chief Mauga said that Alataua District had unanimously selected Pulefaasisina from the ranks of the High Chiefs and high talking chiefs of the district to take up the county seat in the Senate as their new senator.

Senators are not elected but selected by leading chiefs of a county through the process of consensus.

The Lealataua seat became vacant following a court ruling last month which declared that former senator, Liua Taifane, was not constitutionally elected.
