China angered by Taiwanese visit to Fiji

2:09 pm on 5 May 2005

The Chinese Government will protest strongly to the Fiji government over what it says are possible official contacts between Fiji and Taiwan.

This comes after the Taiwanese president, Chen Shui-bian, arrived in Nadi in a previously unannounced visit, at the end of a tour of three Pacific countries with ties to Taipei.

The Suva-based Chinese Ambassador, Cai Jinbiao, says his office was told that the Taiwanese delegation was making a technical transit through Fiji from Tuvalu.

Fiji TV had reported that the Fiji prime minister, Laisenia Qarase, was to meet the Taiwanese president but Mr Qarase's secretary says no encounter took place.

Ambassador Cai says Taiwan is well known for its tactics to sabotage China's relations with Fiji.
